INSIGHT FROM THE EDTECH SECTOR SNAPSHOT

The Australian EdTech sector has undergone rapid growth, doubling in size between 2014 and 2019. The sector is made up of 600 EdTech companies employing 13,000 staff and generating $2.2Bn in revenue.

Over the past two years the sector has matured, with more early stage startups progressing to late stage startups. However, our research also shows that revenue, employment and export impact is still driven by a small number of large companies.

This graph shows Australia’s EdTech sector has a distinct small business component with 58% of 10+ year old companies having less than $2M in annual revenue.

EdTech companies take time to build significant revenue, and we only see $2M+ revenue companies appear after 4 years of trading.

The graph also highlights the importance of consultants in the EdTech ecosystem.
