Panel Discussion: The Globalisation of Online Education
Overview
Technology is changing the way education is delivered and experienced. It expands beyond physical boundaries and into new credential pathways. International demand for quality, scalable education is also growing, as populations and economies expand, and as countries look to rapidly up-skill large tranches of their workforce.
Education providers are considering how they can best meet this demand and respond to the digitalisation of education services, with global competitors now providing short and long courses that are available from anywhere, at any time.
But what is driving demand for online education in offshore markets? Won’t international students always want to come onshore for employment opportunities, to practise their English language skills, and to experience the Australian culture and landscape? Does online blended with face to face learning provide a cheaper alternative pathway? Or are there new market segments that we should be exploring, such as the growing global cohort of mid-career professionals who are looking to re-skill but can’t afford to travel or leave their family and current job?
