The Search for Effective Practice: Designing and Delivering Real Impact in Online Safety Education

Scope

Pivot’s education technology was at the core of a transformative approach to cybersecurity education, moving beyond technical instruction to focus on behavior, values, and student wellbeing. Deployed across seven schools with 34 teachers and 888 students, Pivot’s real-time student voice surveys captured measurable changes in online behavior and digital citizenship. The platform provided schools with clear, data-driven insights into the effectiveness of their programs, revealed strong links between teacher confidence and student outcomes, and identified professional development needs. By enabling ongoing evaluation and values-based dialogue, Pivot delivered a scalable solution that empowered schools to embed meaningful and lasting change in their digital safety education.

Challenge:

Beyond technical skills – Cyber education that shapes behavior and values

In a constantly evolving digital world, schools face the challenge of teaching cybersecurity not just as a set of technical skills, but as a framework for safe and ethical online behavior. However, many programs focus only on passwords or personal data, overlooking digital citizenship, online integrity, and the social impact of virtual interactions. Additionally, a lack of teacher confidence and disconnect between content and school values hinder effective and sustained implementation.

Solution:

Pivot and the Cyber Safety Project evidence-based EdTech that focuses on values

Pivot partnered with the Cyber Safety Project to run a pilot across 7 schools, involving 34 teachers and 888 students. Pivot provided tailored student surveys that captured the impact of the curriculum beyond technical knowledge. The results were powerful: 94.3% of students said they changed their passwords based on what they learned, and a similar percentage reported becoming “kinder and better people online”

How Pivot makes a difference:

  • Ongoing, measurable evaluation: Pivot’s student surveys tracked real-time changes in behavior and perception, giving schools tangible ways to assess impact.
  • Link to wellbeing: Pivot revealed a strong correlation between teachers’ confidence in using technology and students’ sense of wellbeing and support.
  • Facilitating dialogue: Pivot enabled meaningful conversations between teachers and students, connecting digital safety lessons to core school values like empathy and respect.
  • Support for teacher development: The data provided clear insight into professional development needs, helping build educator confidence in teaching cybersecurity.

Impact:

A Scalable Model With Visible Outcomes

Thanks to Pivot’s flexible design and implementation, schools were able to align cybersecurity education with their institutional values. Students were empowered as digital leaders, and the data-driven approach supported sustainable change at a systemic level. Pivot’s insights offered clarity in an environment where educators often face data overload.

Pivot proved to be a powerful tool for transforming cybersecurity education: not only did it measure impact, it sparked conversations, empowered educators, and fostered a more positive digital culture. In a space where technology can be both a risk and an opportunity, Pivot demonstrated how meaningful use of data can lead to real and lasting change
