MoxieReader – An Aussie startup in the USA

MoxieReader is addressing the reading crisis by inspiring kids to read each and every day. They recognise that no other activity is as impactful and accessible as reading. There is a real challenge for schools and parents to get kids off screens and into books; and that’s where MoxieReader is making a difference. It is a reading community; a software that allows kids to log what books they are reading, connect with other readers, and get recommendations for new books, and gives teachers and parents oversight into reading habits.

MoxieReader launched in New York in 2017 by Australian EdTech entrepreneurs Mim and Dan Ingvarson and is now being used in over 300 classrooms across America. In 2018, MoxieReader was selected to participate in the Female Founders Alliance – Ready Set Raise program, an accelerator for early-stage women-led startups. Being one of only eight participants from across America, MoxieReader’s CEO and co-founder Mim Ingvarson participated in three weeks of remote virtual workshops, followed by an intensive week in Seattle, and a Demo Night. The program showcased MoxieReader to a large US audience and provided exposure to over 100 angel and venture capital investors, founders and experts.

MoxieReader has been praised for supporting passion-driven reading; it is a fun and engaging app that allows kids to see their progress and achievement of goals and earn “MoxiePoints” which are awarded for pro-social behaviours such as book reviews, feedback and encouragement to peers, as well as book recommendations. It also has powerful tracking and analytics information helping educators and parents review progress. The technology uses an algorithm that determines how much a student needs to read based on personalised reading level information set by the teacher.

MoxieReader recognises that often, the challenge is getting the right book into the students hands and as MoxieReader evolves, the use of machine learning will form the backbone of how the suggestions, prompts, and interventions are predicted and applied to best assist and encourage learners.
